SPIRITUALITY IN TOM AND JERRY by Awotiku Akinlayo David
Episode one!
Wait! Did I just hear you think about how funny this topic is? What has Tom and Jerry cartoon got to do with spirituality or Christianity? How is cartoon comedy related to them? These were the exact questions I was asking the Holy Spirit when He gave me the topic, I ignored at first but he kept talking about it, I just couldn’t resist but to share it with my fellow Christians so I made enquiries and ask Him more questions about it, I later discovered it is a sensitive and crucial topic battling with Christians due to their high level of mediocrity.
Tom and Jerry is a comic cartoon, so hilarious that you can see severally and still laugh at the same scenes, even adults laugh when they watch despite how childish it can be, but I’ve got little lesson which I’ve driven out to share with you from their lives. Tom is the cat and Jerry is the mouse, every viewers know the rate at which they hate each other, they hunt and play deadly pranks on each other which result in hurting one another but despite deadly and destroying their attacks are to each other, despite the pulverization, have you noticed that they never die? Even if they shoot themselves, fell from the sky, got burnt by fire, they can even blow themselves up, they still don’t die. Probably they are immortal according to the film, because all that happen after such incidence is that their body get distorted in shape and later there is an auto-restore of their body, it will just come back to normal meanwhile the hunting for hurting still continues. I guess this is their purpose in life “to hunt and hurt each other”, that is how their creator designed their mentality because the more they hunt and hurt each other brutally, the more they get distorted in shape, the more they auto-restored themselves and the more the hurting continues, it’s circular, they will never die till eternity except their creator stop producing the cartoon again.
At this juncture, let us relate it to ourselves as Christians, we have different kinds of enemies around us, no matter how brutal, or deadly their acts and plans can be against us, they can never kill us because we are immortal, they can only kill us physically if God permits them, it is only God that has the power to destroy both soul, spirit and body in hell (Matthew 10:28) but He won’t. The same applies to us, no matter how brutal or deadly our prayer points or other styles of trying to kill them can be, they are dead already so you will just be trying to kill a dead man instead of finding ways to give them live that you already possess in Christ Jesus. So my brethren, why the need to waste your precious time praying for their deaths?
Don’t be like Tom and Jerry who hunt and play deadly pranks on each other, leave those enemies alone because they are not the real enemy, they are just tools in the hand of the real enemy. Focus on more important things, focus on God, focus on Jesus (Heb.12:2), focus on your career, focus on things above (Col.3:2), focus on the Bible, focus on knowing more about God, focus on knowing more about the authority you possess in Christ, focus on the Holy Spirit to lead you, focus on how you will fulfil God’s purpose for your life, focus on how you are going to affect your generation and the ones to come, focus on your service to God and especially focus on how to improve your love for your physical enemies.
