SPIRITUALITY IN TOM AND JERRY by Awotiku Akinlayo David
Final Episode
Here is a little lesson Jesus taught us about our enemies (Matt.5:43-48). ‘Enemies’ was explained by Jesus in the same verse 44 ‘But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;’ the contextual meaning of ‘enemies’ here refers to human being persecuting us not the devil which is the real enemy. Jesus understood clearly what we termed to be enemies in our human understanding since he was also human as at that time. Jesus told us to love them, give gifts to them and be good to them, bless them and pray for them that they might also come to the knowledge of the truth, this is when you are showing that indeed you are truly a child of God, it shows you are a merciful child just as your father in heaven is merciful (Other reference on this is in Lk.6:27-36), It means you are portraying your father’s attributes. Don’t waste time trying to kill them with dangerous prayers and the likes, don’t be a ‘Tom and Jerry’ Christian with your enemies, if you keep doing this, they won’t stop hunting you and you will waste all the days of your live trying to address them, this can result to living a purposeless life, what a waste of live and purpose? Why will you leave the important and necessary things of your life to chase on some enemies and dwell on irrelevant prayers? Receive understanding in Jesus name.
Finally Brethren, I leave you with Paul’s letter to the Romans in the 12th chapter from verses 14 down to 21, a genuine Christian is the one who can love his enemies more than himself, who don’t think evil against their enemies, who shows humility in his dealings with them and does not think of being wise on his own opinion, who always loves their enemies sincerely despite what they had done against them, who does not only repay evil for evil but also does not want any evil things on them at all (Like Tom and Jerry Lolss), (do you even know that despite the fighting and conflicts between Tom and Jerry, there are some episodes where they became friends and help each other even though there are cases where they betray themselves later because they love the way they are hunting and playing deadly pranks), love is the greatest gift God has given us so we are to show them also. Don’t just love your friends or neighbours alone, love your enemies also, it is a great strategy of winning them to Christ, pray for their salvation, and help them when they are in need or in trouble. As Jesus said earlier in (Matt 5:48), your good Christian behaviour is not completely perfect until you learn to love your enemies as yourselves, and hence, you will become perfect just as your father in heaven is perfect.
Thanks for reading through till the end.
