DO NOT BE CONSCIOUS OF YOUR CONSCIENCE by Awotiku Akinlayo David
DO NOT BE CONSCIOUS OF YOUR CONSCIENCE
I took my friend’s pure water last night, after
his dinner he had nothing to drink and was seriously looking for it but I was
so ashamed of myself that I couldn’t confess. My conscience was condemning me
so much that I left the house till the next day, I was thinking and calculating
the dangers of telling him because it could tarnish my integrity among my
people and as well reduce his trust for me. Yet I summoned courage to tell him
and after that he didn’t even see it as issue, we just laughed it off and that
was all.
The conscience is the
greatest judge every individual possess, conscience is not limited to good
people; everyone including those terrorists, hired assassins and corrupt
leaders have a conscience. Conscience judges Christians based on their works
but cannot help us to live a correct life. Conscience
is a higher professor in critics and judging department, it judges our
every actions, reminds us of our faults and portrays our mistakes to be deadly.
Judas was condemned by his conscience that he
committed suicide. Peter was also condemned by his conscience but he knew the
right thing to do so he went into a closet and prayed for repentance. A higher
percentage of people attempting suicide today are based on the condemnation and
judgement that their conscience placed on them.
The devil uses our
conscience a lot to condemn and judge us according to the law but God used
conscience to convict people with self-righteousness of their sins just like
Jesus used it to convict the accusers of the adulterous woman (John 8:9). Now the Holy Spirit is there
to remind us of our righteous state in Christ even when our conscience condemns
us.
A judge gets his
accusations against a culprit from the laws and constitutions guiding a land
and gives his judgement based on it. So also does the conscience gets his power
to condemn from the laws of Moses, the more you know the law the more the
conscience exposes your faults. Romans 3:20b – ‘…for the more we
know of God's laws, the clearer it becomes that we aren't obeying them; his
laws serve only to make us see that we are sinners. [TLB]’ (Also check 1Cor.10:25, 27).
It is certain that we
will continue to have different condemnations from our conscience but don’t let
them bring you down, in fact many Christians thought it is the Holy Spirit
convicting them of sins but here is the work of the Holy Spirit in John 16:8-10 – ‘And when He has come, He
will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin,
because they do not believe in Me; of
righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; [NKJV]’ since
you have the righteousness of God in you through Christ, His work is to remind
you and put to your subconscious mind of that truth. The sins you commit does not have any effect on the righteousness that
was imputed in you by Jesus.
God never gave anyone permission to condemn
you, neither can the angels nor your conscience or yourself talk less of the
devil. God is the only one who has every right to condemn you but I’ve got a
good news for you, instead of Him condemning us, He justified us. Romans
8:33-34 – ‘Who dares accuse us whom God
has chosen for his own? Will God? No! He is the one who has forgiven us and
given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? Will Christ?
No! For he is the one who died for us and came back to life again for us and is
sitting at the place of highest honor next to God, pleading for us there in
heaven. [TLB]’
However, Paul was
able to live in good conscience because he lived his life according to the
leading of the spirit (Acts 23:1, 24:16). So also Christians are to follow the
spirit to have a good conscience void of sins and errors, but when we err and
make mistakes, don’t be conscious of the
condemnation of the conscience instead be conscious of the Holy Spirit’s
conviction of your righteousness.
Finally I am signing off with this short
message, we have the flesh in us who still wants us to live to satisfy its
desires hence we are vulnerable of its temptation which sometimes made us
venture into some errors but don’t be conscious of what your conscience is
telling you at that point in time, it won’t help you to overcome the sin
instead be conscious of what the spirit has to remind you. Galatians 5:16 – ‘I advise you to obey only the Holy Spirit's
instructions. He will tell you where to go and what to do, and then you won't
always be doing the wrong things your evil nature wants you to’ [TLB]. You
can only subdue or mortify the flesh decisions in you by following the Spirit,
let him lead you just as Paul was led that he lived his life in good
conscience.
When you are condemned by your heart, don’t be
troubled or disheartened, and never give up. Remember that God is greater than
your heart, God knows everything (1John 3:20). He is the one helping you to
live a life with good conscience void of sins and faults. Live right today through
the spirit and you will live a life void of evil conscience and condemnation
with its judgement.
I Call You Blessed!
