THE SOMETHING IN YOU THAT TALKS TO YOU

I was offended by someone today, it was a very grievous one that could instigate high level of annoyance which could lead to something else. It was an intentional act and was obvious to people that he was at fault yet the person tried to prove himself right. I wanted to retaliate, give abusive responses and even slap or beat the person blue-black but something in me told me to calm down, that something cautioned me so that it won’t go beyond this level  to creating hatred, grief and fight amongst brethren.

I was coming home from church last Sunday, the road I always pass was on my mind while something in me told me to pass the other route. I argued because the road was the fastest and I ignored the leading, I followed the normal road I always pass. A fatal accident happened that almost claimed my life. I felt if I had listened to that something that was telling me to pass the other long route, I wouldn’t have been a victim of accident.

I got an interview from a reputable industry which my monthly salary will be more than enough to sustain me but something in me told me to remain in the church I was working for as the Organist. I couldn’t imagine how much time the little stipend will sustain me even for a week. I followed the leading and one day a member gave me a free ticket to travel to abroad to work and as well further my studies.

These and more instances are scenarios whereby we assume that the something speaking to us is a good thing but we are ignorant of what is talking to us.

Many of us can’t tell what is actually speaking to us in such situation because we lack the knowledge of the Spirit that is resident in us. There is stunted or no growth in our Spiritual Koinonia which constitute a shallow understanding of the Spirit. We cannot clearly identify what is speaking to us and so we blindly refer the spoken words to be coming from something in us. We don’t know whether it is from the spirit of God or the demons.

It amazes me because it’s more common among believers than in the midst of unbelievers. We have so downgraded the Spirit we carry within us and regard Him as ‘something in me’. We claim we are God’s children yet we lack the understanding of that spirit that bears witness that we are the sons of God (I was once guilty of this as well until  I knew the truth).

There is no something that talks to us rather there is someone living inside us informing us on what to do per time either in a normal situation or in confusing states. Hear yourself, ‘something in you that talks…’ Can a something talk? A literate person should know that a thing can not talk unless there is an experimental work on it. It is only a living being that has the ability to talk.

The one you regard as something is actually the Holy Spirit. He is the spirit of God imputed in Christians. He is not an ‘it’ but a ‘He’. Stop regarding Him as something. Although he is not bothered with the way you refer him because such reference does not stop Him from speaking to you. Meanwhile He is bothered with your high level of ignorance of Him. He wants to reveal more of Himself to you that’s why he wants a Koinonia with all Christians. You should be very interested to fellowship with him, chat and gist with him, create hunger to know him more. So don’t misplace him for something any time you hear him speak to you rather be conscious of him at all times.

Take your time to learn about Him, come with a sincere and open heart, discuss your challenges with him, consult him on what to do when you want to take decisions and let him enlighten you about the mysteries of God.

As a matter of fact, the devil can talk to you as well, if you are still a person that regards the Holy Spirit as something, the devil takes advantage of it and repackages lies to look like the truth just to deceive you. You will follow it with ease because you will assume it is that something that talks to you, and since you don’t have relationship with the Holy Spirit, you will find it difficult to discern. The reason is subjected to our tagging of every in-built talking as a something, you won’t bother to thoroughly sieve it and relate it with the word of God if it is from the Spirit of truth or from the spirit of lie. So you will believe it and act on it immediately. What a costly assumption!

Many Christians are still confuse if it is the Holy Spirit that speaks to them or something else, they refer him to be something as an excuse to cover their uncertainty. They feel the Holy Spirit will convict them and vindicate himself if the outcome later is bad. Matthew 7:11 – ‘If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!’ I tell you today that you can’t request for the Holy Spirit and get evil spirit. Therefore if that is the case, be bold to claim that you have been spoken to by the spirit of God because that is the Spirit that lives in you. Don’t be unsure to doubt the presence of the Holy Spirit within you. Be certain that it is the best and greatest automatic gift from our heavenly father when you got born again.

The more you get familiar with the Holy Spirit, the more you will know when He is speaking to you. As Jesus said it in John 10:14 – "I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me. He further explained in John 10:27-28 – ‘My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.’

The problem we are facing is lack of knowledge about the Holy Spirit which made ability to discern very complicated for us. Discernment can only be stronger when there is deeper assignment to learn about the Holy Spirit so as to boost our spiritual advancement. Therefore if you really want to discern every time you hear a voice, you need to give yourself to study and meditation on the word of God then relate it to the voice. Therefore, you really need to get familiar with the Holy Spirit so that you can get used to His style, his word of truth and how he says it.

Finally brethren, quit saying something talks to you from within instead boldly claim that the Holy Spirit has spoken to me, it scares the devil a lot. It is a sign of assurance, boldness or confidence that you are conscious of His presence in you. This will also help the people with less faith. The life of God is a life that gives directions, direct Christians and leads by His spirit. Therefore a believer is never led by something or anything instead we are led by someone, a personality which is the Spirit of God called the HOLY SPIRIT.
