PRAYER: Let’s Pray! Father we
receive your word with contrite heart, we’ve clarity and understanding of your
truth, there is no confusion, distraction or obstruction in the flow of the
word tonight, We are blessed and renewed in our minds after the simplicity of
your word. Amen!
We've seen from the first
session that Jesus Christ came to save us from sin and death and redeem them
that were under the law.
And she shall bring forth
a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from
their sins. Matt 1:21
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for
the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of
God should taste death for every man. Heb. 2:9
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son,
made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law,
that we might receive the adoption of sons. Gal. 4:4-5
We'd discuss much later in
details how all these were achieved.
So, we can actually say
Jesus was born to die. And he was obedient unto death, even death of the cross.
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became
obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Phil 2:8
Same thing the writer of
Hebrews said in chapter 2 and verse 9
Thus, it was His death for
us that made the cross inevitable.
That said. You'd notice
that in the Gospels (the synoptic accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)
Jesus spoke much about His death and even how the death would be.
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how
that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief
priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Matt.
16:21
32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went
before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And
he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto
him, 33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be
delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn
him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: 34 And they shall mock
him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and
the third day he shall rise again. Mark 10:32-34
22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of
man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 23 And they shall kill him, and
the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. Matt
17:22-23
Jesus at a point in time
began to inform His disciples ahead that he'd soon go and die, but they didn't
understand.
32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked,
and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: 33 And they shall scourge him, and
put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. 34 And they understood none of these things:
and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were
spoken. Luke 18:32-34
See, Jesus was very
informed about his death, how it'd be and that he'd be raised on the third day.
He knew every detail and
he talked about it as well...
"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so
must the Son of man be lifted up:" John 3:14
"And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men
unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die" John
12:32-33
How did He know all these?
Let's take a hint from
Apostle Paul....
Apostle Paul reveals to us
that when you read the Holy Scriptures (Genesis to Malachi) you should
primarily learn salvation which is by faith in Jesus Christ.
And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto
salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Tim 3:15
The scriptures should make
you wise unto salvation.
In fact, salvation in
Christ is the inspiration of the scriptures, hear what Paul said in the next
verse...
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Tim
3:16
The profitability of the
scriptures is unto righteousness, righteousness and salvation are by faith in
Christ.
So, how did Jesus know He
was to die?
How did He know it'd be on
the cross?
HE read the scriptures!
He saw his destiny in the
scriptures.
Read this carefully....
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as
his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for
to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias.
And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the
gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach
deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at
liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And
the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he
began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. Luke
4:16-21
Everything Jesus would
fulfil had already been written in the scriptures, so He had a custom of always
reading the scriptures to learn the things written concerning Him so He could
fulfil them.
Jesus read the scriptures,
studiously!
This is a lesson for us
all, Jesus, the Son of God, read the scriptures.
How much more we, we have
no excuse not to be studious.
His understanding of the
scriptures was unique, people marveled at how He taught the scriptures.
That's because He used the
scriptures to teach about himself.
While the other teachers
of his time were using the scriptures to enrich themselves and enslave the
people.
Hear his rebuke to them...
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life:
and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39
They were using the
scriptures for other things other than to accurately learn of the Christ.
If they (the religious
leaders and elders) were truly masters of the law they should have recognized
the ministry of Jesus like John the Baptist did, but they couldn't.
Thank God for one of them,
Nicodemus, he came to Jesus privately to enquire more.
From Genesis to Malachi,
God was loud about salvation in Christ.
He told Adam, He told
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
He told Moses and all the
Prophets,
Oh, I love King David, he
talked so much about God's salvation in Christ.
Let’s meet in the next session.
Glory to God!
