PRAYER: Pray for clarity in the explanation of the word and
also in the understanding of the same.
Pray
that the Spirit of Christ will guide us into His truth and enlighten us richly
tonight!
Father
our study of your word tonight is blessed, by Your Spirit we have clear
understanding of everything that will be shared, our minds will receive Your
word with humility and contriteness, there's no confusion in us.
We've learnt that the man
Jesus was born to die, and His death was what made going to the cross inevitable
for Him.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took
upon him the form of a servant, and was
made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he
humbled himself, and became obedient
unto death, even the death of the cross. Phil. 2:5-8
In fact, close to the end,
He felt like abandoning His purpose but He asked for strength to fulfill it. He
endured it.
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the
joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set
down at the right hand of the throne of God. Heb. 12:2
We've also seen that
everything He accomplished had all already been written by prophets before He
came.
Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go
up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the
Son of man shall be accomplished. Luke 18:31
His destiny had been
documented by Moses in his laws, the prophecies of Old time prophets like
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel and King David too.
Hear what He told His
disciples that were ignorant of these things...
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that
the prophets have spoken: 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things,
and to enter into his glory? 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he
expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:25-27
And what was the purpose
for the "bible study" He gave them??
See it, the next verses...
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ
to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in
his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of
these things. Luke 24:46-48
That His death and
resurrection was for the remission of sins.
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you,
while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written
in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. Luke
24:44-45
So, what God did was to
reveal beforehand everything that His Son would accomplish.
He was going to be a man
like every other person, He wasn't born with knowledge of all things concerning
Himself. He had to read about it in the scriptures.
And He could read them
because God had inspired prophets to compile their prophecies. These
compilations became useful to the Son in identifying His purpose.
It was from what was
written (in the scriptures) that Jesus knew He had to die/suffer, be raised on
the third day and be glorified....
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ
to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. Luke 24:46
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into
his glory? 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto
them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:26-27
It was also from the
scriptures that He knew his death would be on the cross...
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must
the Son of man be lifted up. John 3:14
Jesus must have read Moses
account in Numbers;
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it
came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent
of brass, he lived. Num. 21:9
So everything Jesus came
to do, his birth, ministry, death and resurrection had all been written before
He came.
These people had unbelief,
not only in Jesus but also in Moses. See what Jesus told them before saying
this;
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of
me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye
have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are
they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have
life. John 5:37-40
Hear Jesus...
For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote
of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
John 5:46-47
In fact, Jesus accredited
the books of Moses, that the things He wrote were concerning Him.
The Father had used the
writings of Moses and all the prophets to bear witness of the Son, but these
people didn't believe.
Their forefathers behaved
the same way, when Moses preached God's grace to them in the Gospel, they
didn't believe Moses...
And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a
testimony of those things which were to be spoken after. Heb. 3:5
Moses declared the
testimony of God to them, BUT...
For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that
came out of Egypt by Moses. 17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it
not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? 18 And to
whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that
believed not? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. Heb.
3:16-19
They had unbelief and so
they couldn't enter into the promise of God for them.
They preferred sacrifices
and religious ceremonies like they were doing while still in Egypt.
I hope someone is getting
this...
The Gospel was preached to
them but they didn't have faith in it.
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the
word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that
heard it. Heb. 4:2
"Them" here
refers to the Israelites that Moses led out of Egypt. "Them" are the
people being described from chapter 3.
We'll also see that the
Gospel was preached to Abraham and he believed it.
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen
through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall
all nations be blessed. Gal. 3:8
That's why we can find his
name in what is called the "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews 11, all the
people mentioned there are examples of people that believed the Gospel in the
Old Testament.
Abel too heard this same
message and he believed it, or why do you think his sacrifice was an animal?
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain,
by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his
gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. Heb. 11:4
Let’s take a closer look
at Abraham...
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that
had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was
said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able
to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a
figure. Heb. 11:17-19
Can you see why Abraham
wanted to sacrifice Isaac?
It was because according
to the Gospel that was preached to him, God could raise the dead.
Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead;
from whence also he received him in a figure. Heb. 11:19
Even though there has
never been an account of anyone being raised from the dead before then, Abraham
already saw it in the Gospel. So, he reasoned that if I sacrifice this son, God
would give me many others.
And he was correct, see
what he was thinking here...
For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all
things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation
perfect through sufferings. Heb. 2:10
Jesus taught this in a
sermon...
And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of
man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground
and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. John
12:23-24
And indeed many sons came
after the suffering (death) of Christ.
That's what Abraham saw
and believed.
He was told that his seed
would be a blessing to the world, he thought it was Isaac.
But God wasn't referring
to Isaac as the seed, but JESUS, who would come from the lineage of Abraham,
then Isaac and down that blood line...
Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God
made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the
kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his
Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his
iniquities. Acts 3:25-26
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not,
And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Gal
3:16
I love the way Paul puts
it here, I'll use it as a summary for this session;
1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle,
separated unto the gospel of God, 2 (Which he had promised afore by his
prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; Rom. 1:1-3
So, anyone that reads the Holy
Scriptures must realize that God inspired them as witness to the Son and all
that the Son will accomplish in saving man from sin and death.
We'll visit some of the prophets in the next session and see why
Jesus death had to be on the cross.
Glory to God!
