THE PRAYING PLAYER By Awotiku Akinlayo David

THE PRAYING PLAYER by Awotiku Akinlayo David

Some mindsets has been generalized about instrumentalists in this dispensation of time, it is either they are not born again, or some are not fervent in prayers while some are not worded, they are just bunch of unserious and immature Christians. The assumption is obviously visible among most church instrumentalists. However this article is mainly for born again instrumentalists.

Correcting the mindset of people about instrumentalists is the first thing. It has become a modus operandi that people assume that most instrumentalists are not spiritual because we just keep playing instruments when prayers are going on during a concert or program (I’m an organist). Many will be on social media when sermons are going on while some will even walk out of the auditorium to discuss in groups outside and come in when it is time to sing.

In actual fact, the assumption that instrumentalists are carnal Christians are of high percentage but it is not true in all cases. I once heard from someone that he doesn’t believe you can be praying and playing instrument at the same time, well it may align with someone else’s belief but personally, I do play keyboard very well either during services when prayers are conducted or during my personal devotion and I pray fervently as well.

It is not about who is praying or playing while sermons or prayers are going on, in fact some ministers like Joshua Selman and Christ Delvan loves keyboard playing in background while they preach or lead prayers, hence it is about who is a praying player.

The second aspect is to the instrumentalists, if you are still fond of going out to discuss or chat in groups outside the auditorium or being online on social media while church programs are going on, you don’t know what you have taken, it’s high time you stopped it and participate actively in the programs especially Christocentric ones.
It’s dishearten to observe that many of us are not spirit conscious when playing instead we are all skillful conscious. Many of us don’t have personal spiritual altar and we are not consistent in prayers and daily devotion or quiet time.

Look at David in 1 Samuel 16:18 – ‘Then one of the servants answered and said, "Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; AND THE LORD IS WITH HIM."’ Skillfulness is paramount as an instrumentalist but spirituality is more important. The intensity of your professional playing is not proportional to your spiritual reality. The fact that there was supernatural manifestation when you were playing does not mean your spiritual life is improving. Have you ever been conscious that God is in you always?

As an instrumentalist, you must be spiritually inclined and sensitive. Preparation before presentation is important but personal ministration before general ministration is more important. It is not just about how long your rehearsal took, of course it is very core in preparing so it should not be downgraded but praying fervently and studying the bible frequently is more sacrosanct. Times without number my personal rehearsals ended up in deep worship and prayer sessions.
I may be a keyboardist but I’m a spiritual one, that’s where my uniqueness lies, it is what differs me from others and I’m always conscious of that. ‘I was playing during an impartation program some months back, after I finished playing I touched someone and the person fell under the power of anointing only to start prophesying later on’.

Don’t just be playing, make sure you are always praying during and outside the programs. Don’t use your playing as an excuse of not praying, you can be praying in tongues as you are playing. Have personal altar and devote time to study the word of God and pray consistently. You must be a praying player if you really want your ministration not to affect head whereby people shout in excitement because of your professional playing but to touch hearts and transform lives. Before, during and after playing in a program, always be conscious that you are a spiritual person therefore you should pray at all times.

I am proud to be a praying player, what about you? Selah!
I call you blessed!
